I'm not dead yet... at least I don't think I am.

Some of you may have noticed that I haven't made a blog post in a while (others may notice that very few people actually read this blog and even fewer pay attention to it so I'm not sure why I keep at it) and there's a below average reason for this. I started playing World of Warcraft again. I know that it's sad and I'm probably now classes as a nerd who is to nerds what nerds are to normal people but I don't really care. The thing is, thats what is really bugging me.
I understand that there is a huge prejudice towards WoW players and even MMO players in general but I don't really understand it. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has loads of players, almost as many as some MMOs, but for some reason isn't considered to be that nerdy. On the other hand Counter Strike has almost as many players as CoD but is seen as nerdy. You have to wonder why that is. Both are arcade shooters dressed up as a realistic shooters and have as many similarities as they have differences, but one is nerdy and one isn't.
As I mentioned they aren't even realistic shooters. CoD is more of a DPPFFRWSIWWBTONOTMTWHAAFAPAHD shooter (LOOK IT UP!) while CS is just plain and simple arcade shooter. Is that why CoD isn't seen as nerdy? Because it isn't an arcade game (Even thought the multiplayer is)?
Now all of this rambling is leading to a point. The point is this: Much like good, evil, truth and justice, nerdy doesn't exist. It is a label slapped on anything that isn't as popular as other things OR is more popular than other things. WoW is loved and played by millions of people who like to be good at it and is therefore nerdy. CS is popular with kids who aren't quite as cool (another thing that doesn't exist) as people who are popular (I guess that one exists though). CoD is liked by the 'popular' people and is therefore not nerdy. From this I conclude that 'popular people' are totally insane.

  1. COD is in no way seen as realistic, games like battlefield are often the more tactical based ones where running and gunning is less frequent. the cs community is called nerdy due to it being accociated with room 30 and so on, while cod is more of an outside event and is considerd normal. for example the notion of being in a room of about 30 people playing cs at the same time is seen to be more nerdy than simply sitting in your room playing cod. there are strange steryotypes but just like a charactor study they make sense when you compare them lol. also you could say that COD is more casual and highly referenced in todays gameing society by many people, while cs has more of a social and mod based for example society, cs is like an event, cod is an escape to a world where sniper montages are cool and glitches are more recognised than the game its self.
